Agriculture: The Real Source of Sustainability for Nigerians

For decades, Nigeria has depended heavily on crude oil as the backbone of its economy. Yet, despite enormous oil wealth, millions of Nigerians continue to battle unemployment, rising food prices, inflation, and widespread poverty.

The lesson is becoming increasingly clear: the nation’s long-term prosperity cannot rest on oil alone. Agriculture remains the most reliable path to sustainable economic growth and national food security.

Long before the discovery of crude oil, agriculture sustained Nigeria’s economy. Cocoa from the West, groundnuts from the North, palm produce from the East, and rubber from the South generated jobs, foreign exchange, and thriving rural communities. The sector built regional economies and provided livelihoods for millions of families.

Today, agriculture still contributes significantly to Nigeria’s economy and remains one of the country’s largest employers. However, the sector is constrained by insecurity, inadequate infrastructure, poor access to finance, limited mechanisation, climate challenges, and high post-harvest losses. Addressing these obstacles could unlock enormous opportunities for food production, exports, industrial growth, and employment.

A nation that cannot feed itself cannot truly claim economic independence. Nigeria possesses fertile land, favourable climatic conditions, abundant water resources, and a youthful population capable of driving an agricultural revolution. What is required is deliberate investment in irrigation, improved seedlings, rural roads, storage facilities, extension services, research, and modern farming technology.

Agriculture should no longer be viewed as a survival occupation for the rural poor. It must become a profitable business that attracts young entrepreneurs, investors, scientists, and technology innovators. Mechanised farming, agro-processing, digital agriculture, and value-added production can transform farming into one of Nigeria’s biggest wealth-creating industries.

Governments at all levels should make agriculture a national priority by ensuring farmers have access to affordable credit, quality inputs, insurance, secure farmlands, and stable markets. Private sector participation should also be encouraged to strengthen agricultural value chains and expand exports.

Every Nigerian has a role to play. Young graduates should see agribusiness as a career of opportunity rather than a last resort. Educational institutions should strengthen agricultural education, while communities should support local food production and processing.

Nigeria’s future will not be secured by crude oil alone. Sustainable prosperity will come from the land—through the hard work of farmers, innovation, investment, and sound public policies. Agriculture offers the nation a realistic pathway to food security, industrial development, job creation, and economic resilience.

The time has come for Nigeria to return to its roots. By making agriculture the cornerstone of national development, the country can build a stronger economy, reduce dependence on imports, empower millions of citizens, and secure a more prosperous future for generations to come.
