Chelsea must do everything to avoid defenders agreeing on pre-contracts to leave in January
This situation is far from ideal as it is, but what will make it much much worse and what Chelsea need to do all they can to avoid happening, is allowing any of their defenders to agree pre-contracts to join new clubs in January, which is what they are allowed to do.
We do not want to be in a position where we have four, or even one of our current defenders in our backline playing out the rest of the season at Chelsea having already agreed to sign for a new club. Because I don’t care what anybody says, there is no way that player’s heart will still be completely in the current situation and fighting for Chelsea.
The ideal situation of course is to get all four of Andreas Christensen, Antonio Rudiger, Cesar Azpilicueta, and Thiago Silva to agree on new contracts before January, but we do not know the ins and outs and sometimes in football, some things are impossible.
But having said that, we need to keep the dialogue open right until the summer and look to still try and get these guys to sign new deals even if there has been a standoff or a stalemate in talks.
Reopen talks and try again, don’t let them make their decision in January.
There are many months from January until June where things can change, so a final decision must not be made by any parties in January if it goes that far.
