COVID-19: Kogi Finally Gets 1st Covid-19 Cases As NCDC Records Highest Ever Daily Cases And Total of 8,733

Nigeria may have recorded it’s highest number of daily coronavirus cases so far as the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) reports 389 new cases of the virus in the country (For May 27).

The previous highest was 386 recorded on May 8. This brings the total number of confirmed cases in the country to 8,733.

Lagos continues its dominance on the log with 256 new Covid-19 cases, representing its highest-ever daily tally (the previous highest was 183 recorded on May 7).

This brings the total number of confirmed cases in the state to 4,012 representing 46% of total cases in the country.

The number of cases in Katsina continues to rise amid concerns about mysterious deaths in the state as the case recorded 23 new cases to finish the day in 4th place with 358 cases. Another state with rising numbers is Edo as its 22 new cases give it a total of 240 cases.

Kano recorded 13 new cases to finish the day with 936 total confirmed cases while the FCT is missing from the daily update. Kogi state finally makes its debut on the Covid-19 log with 2 index cases. This means Cross River is the only state yet to enter the register.

By region, of the 22 states in the update, the Northcentral has the most representation with 6 states (Kwara, Nasarawa, Plateau, Benue, Niger and Kogi). The Southsouth was represented by 4 states (Edo, Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Delta).

The Southwest has 3 states in representation (Lagos, Oyo and Ogun). Also with 3 states are the Northwest (Katsina, Kano and Kaduna), the Northeast (Adamawa, Gombe, Borno) and the Southeast (Abia, Imo and Anambra).

Testing, recoveries, deaths and active cases

A total of 48,544 tests have been carried out in the country so far. 116 new recoveries were recorded on the day under review. This brings the total number of discharged cases to 2,501. This puts the country’s recovery rate at 28.6%.

Five new deaths were recorded in the last 24 hours to bring the total Covid-19 deaths to 254. This puts the mortality rate in the country at 2.9%. Currently, there are 5,978 active Covid-19 cases in the country. This means 68.4% of cases are yet unresolved.

Reopening schools

The Nigerian government is set to reopen schools by June 8th and has indeed urged proprietors of private schools as well as state governments to adhere to this directive.

The development was revealed by the Secretary-general of the Federation and Chairman of the Presidential Task Force on Covid-19, Boss Mustapha. He also said guidelines will be rolled to ensure safety of schools and children after they reopen.

“We, therefore, use this medium to urge states, local governments, proprietors and all other stakeholders to begin to take steps that will facilitate an early and safe reopening.”

With the continuous rise of daily confirmed cases, one would think keeping the kid’s indoors a bit longer should be the standard. As such, it is difficult to ascertain if that was a great Children’s Day gift or not.

Africa and the world

On the continent, South Africa continues to record its cases in thousands as the country now has a total of 25,937 confirmed cases. Egypt is next with 19,666 total cases while Algeria is third with 8,857 total cases.

Nigeria isn’t far behind with 8,733 cases and if it continues to get such high number of cases per day, it would likely overtake Algeria by tomorrow.

Around the world, there are more than 5.7 million Covid-19 cases. Nearly 2.5 million people have recovered while more than 350,000 people have died.
