Editorial: President Tinubu Must Give His Economic Reforms a Human Face
Since assuming office in May 2023, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has embarked on far-reaching economic reforms; the most notable is the removal of fuel subsidies, announced during his inauguration.
The administration has maintained that these reforms are necessary to stabilise Nigeria’s economy, improve public finances, and attract long-term investment.
However, while the intended economic benefits may take time to materialise, millions of Nigerians continue to bear the immediate burden of these policies. The reality on the streets is that many families are struggling to meet even their most basic needs.
Food prices have risen sharply, making essential items increasingly unaffordable for low-income households. House rents have climbed in many cities, forcing families to relocate to less suitable accommodation or share overcrowded living spaces. School fees have increased across both public and private institutions, placing quality education beyond the reach of many parents.
Transportation costs have surged due to higher fuel prices, affecting workers, students, traders, and small businesses alike. Healthcare, electricity, and other essential services have also become more expensive, stretching household incomes to the breaking point.
Economic reforms are often accompanied by temporary hardship, but governments also have a responsibility to cushion the impact on the most vulnerable citizens. Nigerians are looking not only for promises of future prosperity but also for practical measures that provide relief today.
The Federal Government should therefore consider strengthening social intervention programmes, expanding support for farmers to increase food production, improving public transportation, investing in affordable housing initiatives, supporting small and medium-sized businesses, and ensuring that targeted assistance reaches the poorest households.
Greater efforts to reduce inflation, create jobs, and improve electricity supply would also help lower the cost of living over time.
President Tinubu has repeatedly expressed his commitment to building a stronger and more prosperous Nigeria.
Achieving that vision will require ensuring that economic reforms are accompanied by policies that protect ordinary citizens from excessive hardship.
A successful reform agenda is one that not only strengthens macroeconomic indicators of the country but also improves the daily living standard of the people.
As the administration continues to implement its economic programme, many Nigerians hope that adjustments will be made where necessary to ease the burden on struggling families.
Reforms that are both economically sound and socially responsive are more likely to earn public confidence and deliver lasting national progress.
