Who doesn’t know that PDP died when Atiku and other liberals left to pitch their tents with ADC?
Who doesn’t also know that it’s now being resurrected by Nyesom Wike and other pro-BAT politicians in the former PDP, and that the only reason for its existence now is to ensure the ruling party’s re-election in 2027?
It also means ethnic ideology – by which a faction of the party supported the ruling party’s candidate in the last election – may now become the party’s mainstream, since that faction now controls the party.
Twenty-five years into the fourth republic, it’s hard to accept that the condition of the party which led the country back to democratic rule represents what’s left of Nigeria’s democracy.
Indeed, the nation’s democracy now looks like a banquet, where the most unscrupulous members of the political class are served, the more sincere are kept standing, while the masses – who are supposed to be in power – are locked out because they’re no longer needed.
Some of us have said repeatedly that ethnic politics has become an obstacle to democracy in Nigeria.
That’s because it’s the only tool used by an indolent and visionless elite to capture power, but has ensured the country almost always ends up with poor leadership.
If Nigerians don’t wake up and divorce ethnic ideology from our politics, then what we’re practicing isn’t democracy but feudalism.
