Liverpool player ratings from Ian Doyle after the 3-2 win away to Villarreal in the Champions League semi-final second leg.

Alisson Becker 7

Given little chance by his defenders for the first-half goals and did brilliantly to deny Lo Celso when the Villarreal man was clear. Not much to do after the break.

Trent Alexander-Arnold 6

Afforded plenty of space by Villarreal down the right but often too hasty with distribution and beaten by Coquelin to header for second. It was the better second half and atoned with a cross for the equaliser. Booked.

Ibrahima Konate 7

Strong when required even if his distribution out the back wasn’t consistent first half, and grew in confidence. More than decent.

Virgil van Dijk 9

Forced to come out of the backline on occasion to mop other people’s mess during the tortuous first half and led by example throughout. Superb.

Andy Robertson 6

Allowed Capoue to nip in to set up Villarreal’s first and didn’t stop the cross from the same player for the second, but like so many Liverpool players completely transformed after the break. Subbed.

Fabinho 7

Struggled to get to grips with the rampaging home midfield before the break but improved markedly and shot through Rulli for Liverpool’s all-important first. Subbed.

Thiago Alcantara 7

At least looked to get Liverpool moving first half, even if his passing radar wasn’t properly tuned in. Bedded down after break and distribution much better. Subbed.

Naby Keita 7

Almost gifted Villarreal a goal with a poor backpass and was woefully out of sorts before the break. But deserves massive credit for his second-half showing and played part in the first and setting up the third goal. Subbed.

Mohamed Salah 7

Had some chances to run at the home defence and looked the one attacking threat for Liverpool’s first half and began to enjoy the greater space the longer the game progressed.

Diogo Jota 5

Had one shot blocked shortly before half-time but was otherwise completely peripheral. Subbed at the interval.

Sadio Mane 8

Put himself about and his physicality was needed up against a solid Villarreal backline. Took the winning goal superbly and

Luis Diaz (for Jota 46) 9

Completely changed the game with his ability to keep the ball, willingness to run and his attacking threat capped by a fine goal.

Jordan Henderson (for Keita 80)

Came on to join the fun.

Kostas Tsimikas (for Robertson 80)

Also involved.

Curtis Jones (for Thiago 80)

Almost netted a fourth for Liverpool.

James Milner (for Fabinho 84)

What Alberto Moreno did at full time after Liverpool beat Villarreal in the Champions League.

Liverpool is into another final after Jurgen Klopp’s side survived a major scare against Villarreal in the Champions League.

Alberto Moreno wasted little time to congratulate his former side after Liverpool booked their place in the Champions League final.

The Reds got the better of Villarreal 5-3 over two legs after a thrilling encounter, which saw Unai Emery’s side take a surprise two-goal lead heading into half-time to draw level on aggregate. But the visitors responded in emphatic fashion after the restart, scoring three times in quick succession to book their place in Paris.

Liverpool has now reached a third final in Europe’s elite competition under the guidance of Jurgen Klopp and has become the first English side to reach the final of the Champions League, FA Cup and League Cup in the same season.
