The bodies of at least 13 people including those of women and children have so far been recovered after a late-night attack on the Tiortyu community in the Tarka Local Government Area of Benue State, North-Central Nigeria.

Newera News gathered that several others who sustained injuries from gunshots while fleeing the attack which occurred at about 11 pm are currently receiving treatment at the NKST Christian Hospital in Uchi.

Meanwhile, youths of the area who are protesting against the deadly attack have blocked the Makurdi-Gboko-Calabar Road grounding traffic on the ever-busy major highway.
Tiortyu community is located about 30 kilometres away from Makurdi, the Benue State capital.

Meanwhile, the Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom has again lamented over the gruesome murder of over 20 persons in fresh attacks on communities, by invading Fulani herdsmen on Monday night.

In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Nathaniel Ikyur, the Governor directed his people to rise to defend themselves forthwith.

Ortom noted that it is becoming increasingly glaring every day, that his people are now an endangered species, and so we can no longer wait for help from anywhere.

He equally added, that his people will have to rise to the occasion, to defend themselves and their heritage against the Fulani army of occupation.

He insisted that his people are law-abiding citizens, who have cried for help against these invaders, with no help in sight.

He said it looks more like a deliberate strategy.

“Now we have only one option, to defend ourselves, or get extinct. This is a case for our survival,” he added.

Governor Ortom, nevertheless, enjoined security operatives to do more in crime prevention, and protection of lives and property in the land, just as he urged the people to cooperate with security agencies, to flush out the undesirable elements in the society.

The state government, he said, will not shy away from its commitment, to provide welfare and security for the citizens.
