Cambridge United Leads Northampton Town With One Goal
Build-up, action and reaction as the U’s aim to reach the second round of the FA Cup this evening
The sides couldn’t be separated in their first match at Sixfields, with the U’s battling back twice to take the tie to the Abbey tonight.
Kion Etete and Paul Lewis had given the hosts the lead on two occasions, but they were pegged back by goals from Sam Smith and Conor Masterson in a 2-2 draw.
The U’s have played two fixtures since facing the Cobblers, but have been beaten in both, with Mark Bonner’s side losing 1-0 at Stevenage in the EFL Trophy and 4-1 at MK Dons in League One on Saturday.
Tonight’s opponents were also beaten in their only match since taking on the U’s, which was a 2-1 defeat at ten man Bristol Rovers on Saturday.
That result knocked Jon Brady’s side out of the automatic promotion places, but the Cobblers are still going well in League Two, occupying a play-off spot in fourth place with 27 points from 16 matches.
Should the sides still not be able to be separated after 90 minutes at the Abbey tonight, the game will head to extra time, or even a penalty shootout if a winner can’t be found in the additional 30 minutes.
