Irigwe Killings: How 23 Suspected Fulani Travellers Were Killed in Plateau Reprisal Attack, Others Injured

Irigwe youths on Friday attacked suspected Fulani travellers at about 10:21 am, in the Gada-Biyu,  Rukuba road area in Jos, the Plateau state capital.

According to authorities, the victims were buried on Saturday after they were intercepted and killed by suspected irate  Irigwe youths in Jos, Plateau State,

Newera News gathered that about 48 of the travellers who were moving in the convoy of 5 hummer buses are unaccounted for at the time of filing this report.

About 14 persons who sustained various degrees of injuries are being treated in hospitals.

The assailants reportedly dragged the victims out of their vehicles which were trapped in gridlock and then killed many of them using machetes, daggers, knives, stones and other dangerous weapons

Governor Simon Bako last night imposed a curfew on Jos North, Jos South and Bassa LGAs between 6 pm and 6:am.

The Governor condemned the attack and warned troublemakers bent on fomenting trouble in the state to desist as the government will not allow any form of lawlessness to disrupt the peace of the state.

The Governor said that attacks on innocent citizens, no matter their background, will never be tolerated in the State. Those who are found to be behind such attacks will be dealt with decisively to serve as a deterrent and restore public order.

The statement added that the Governor has also directed security agencies to swiftly identify and arrest perpetrators.

The spokesperson of Operation Safe Haven, a military task force set up to maintain peace in Plateau State, Major Ishaku Takwa, said 12 persons have been arrested in connection with the incident, while normalcy has been restored in the area.

Residents are advised to report any suspected movements of strange persons in the area to avoid further bloodbaths.
