Easyjet Airline Sack 700 Pilots, Announces 1,900 UK Job Loss In COVID-19 Cut

Easyjet Airline is preparing to permanently close three major UK airport babies, including Stansted, Southend and Newcastle, as part of a huge restructuring following the coronavirus pandemic.

The budget airline announced it will be axing up to 727 pilots, a month after it warned it may need to reduce staff numbers by up to 30%.
Formal consultations with staff are expected to start on Tuesday-Wednesday and said the move would be to help the company “optimise its network and bases as a result of the crisis.”

EasyJet CEO Johan Lundgren said: “These are very difficult proposals to put forward in what is an unprecedented and difficult time for the airline and the industry as a whole.

“We are focused on doing what is right for the company and its long term health and success so we can protect jobs going forward.”

You will recall that some airlines have already relaunched their flight schedules, albeit at limited levels.

EasyJet is resuming flights from next week, although this will be primarily for domestic routes only.

The airline has introduced a range of new safety measures as well for when passengers resume flying.

These include:

  • Enhanced aircraft disinfection for easyJet aircraft
  • Customers, cabin and ground crew will be required to wear masks
  • There will also initially be no food service onboard flights
