Just In: Non Adherence To Social Distance Order Remain Cause Of Community Transmission Of Covid-19

Social distancing is one of several measures aimed at curtailing the rapid spread of the coronavirus pandemic in Nigeria.

However, many individuals across the length and breadth of the country have thrown caution to the winds by flagrantly disobeying the social distancing order by the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control.

And upon a careful observation at the reason for the high records of the coronavirus cases, it was revealed that most residents and workers have defied the safety measures and stringent guidelines by the Federal Government following the gradual easing of the lockdown in Lagos, Ogun and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

According to the guidelines, signed by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) and chairman of the Presidential Committee on COVID-19, Boss Mustapha, recommended the mandatory use of the non-medical face mask/covering for all persons while in public spaces.

Furthermore, findings has also shown that most of the people across Nigeria still walk in the streets without face masks, hence the continues spread via community transmission.

This is evidently seen from the North to the South, East and the West as most residents has continuously violated laid down procedures and hence we see the high rate of community transmission of the COVID-19 disease.

In Lagos state, many residents were seen trooping out en-mass to gather at Banks ATM machines, and others at banks entrance forming a marmot crowd of more than 300 persons, thereby exposing themselves to the disease.

In Kano the same nonchalant attitude has been observed as residents shun social distancing orders both in markets and banks.

Until the government crackdown recently in Kano, many were seen crowded in a truck travelling outside the state with more than 80 person clustering in the truck.

The same case is also recorded in Ekwelobia area of Anambra state, South-eastern Nigeria, where residents also shunned social distancing by gathering at an accident spot where a logistics truck carrying crates of beer crashed and many of the products scattering on the ground.

These residents rushed to the scene to take their share of Beer bottles, causing a massive roadblock, forcing residents to scamper for safety.

According to this trending video that was posted on the social media last week, residents of Ekwulobia in Anambra state could be seen ransacking through the crates to search for bottles that still have contents.

With the residents scrambling to have their own share of free drinks, it was very difficult for them to obey the government’s social distancing directive.

Furthermore, the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control on Sunday confirmed 248 new COVID-19 cases in Nigeria to 4,399.

The agency revealed that Nigeria has recorded 17 more deaths from the pandemic, taking the country’s death toll to 143 with total recoveries rising to 778.

And Eighty-one of the new cases were in Lagos State, 35 in Jigawa, while Borno and Kano states each had 26 new cases confirmed.

Twenty new cases were confirmed for Bauchi, 13 in the Federal Capital Territory Abuja, 12 in Edo, 10 in Sokoto and seven in Zamfara.

Kwara and Kebbi each had four new cases; Gombe, Taraba, Ogun and Ekiti each had two cases, while Osun and Bayelsa had a case each.

Due to the unabated rise in the Covid-19 cases acros the country, the governor of Lagos, Mr. Sanwo-Olu is threatening to re-impose a total lockdown again to safeguard lives of residents.
